Babul to be quizzed again over ‘extra-marital affair’

The investigators have informed that they intend to interrogate the former police officer on the basis of such hints gathered during a recent interrogation of Mitu’s father Mosharraf Hossain and younger sister Shayela Mosharraf Ninja. Mosharraf and Shayela were interrogated at their Banashri residence in Dhaka last Sunday. They informed ADC Md Kamruzzaman of CMP, who is also the investigation officer of the case, that Mitu had tried to commit suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling of her Chittagong GEC residence following physical and mental tortures by Babul’s family. They also mentioned that Babul’s sister Labony tried to marry her brother off to Special Branch SI Akram Hossain Liton’s [killed in 2015] widow Bonani Binte Bonni. As the allegations surfaced in the media a few days before the interrogation, Babul denied the allegation in a Facebook post on January 31, saying that he had been staying in South Sudan in a UN Peacekeeping Mission when the murder took place. He also criticised the media who published fabricated news regarding him. Talking to reporters on Tuesday, IO Kamruzzaman said: “I don’t know anything about the status of Babul Akter while I have talked to him as the plaintiff from time to time as part of the investigation, and he is duly cooperating with the police.” Asked about the hints of Babul’s involvement in the murder, the IO said: “Time has not come yet to make any comment over that matter and the case is still under investigation.” “I have talked to Babul’s sister. I will go to Dhaka again to quiz some more relatives of Babul to verify some information,” he added. Investigators have so far interrogated Mitu’s father Mosharraf Hossain, mother Shaheda Mosharraf Nila, their daughter Ninja, Babul Akter and two cousins of Babul in connection with the murder. They have so far arrested seven of the accused in the case. Two of the arrested accused - Anwar and Wasim -- have given their confessional statement before a court under Section 164 of the CrPC. Prime accused police informant Kamrul Islam Musa is on the run.
