A Chittagong court fixed Sunday for the bail hearing of former superintendent of police Babul Akter, one of the main accused in the sensational Mahamuda Khanam Mitu murder case in Chittagong.
Babul's lawyer, Advocate Kafil Uddin, confirmed that Chittagong Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court-3 passed the order after a hearing from both sides on Wednesday.
"We applied for bail on behalf of SP Babul Akhter. The court has heard both sides' statements. We presented our arguments. After a lengthy hearing, the court has set the bail order,” said the lawyer.
On June 5, 2016, Mitu was stabbed and shot dead when she was walking her son to his school bus stop at Chittagong's GEC intersection.
Following the murder, Babul Akter, a police superintendent at the time, filed a case in 2016.
The PBI concluded that it had information pointing to Babul's involvement in the murder when it delivered its final report on the investigation in May 2021. Mosharraf Hossain, Mitu's father, later filed a murder case against Babul.
On April 9, 2023, Mitu's father Musharraf testified in the opening of the trial for seven accused, including Babul.
Wasim, Anwar, Ehteshamul Haque Bhola, Shahjahan Mia, Musa and Khairul are the other suspects who were indicted.
On July 18, 2023, according to a testimony of a witness in court, Babul Akter gave Tk3 lakh to the killers who took part in the killing of his wife, Mahmuda Khanam Mitu.
