Several syndicates become active after Secondary School Certificate (SSC) or Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) exams by giving advertisement on social media for changing results.
Advertisements pour in Whatsapp, Viber, Imo and other social media sites guaranteeing people to change exam results.
With the hope of achieving GPA-5 or good results, many examinees fall prey to these advertisements.
A number of victims said they have suffered a huge financial loss.
Experts asked guardians and students to be alert of these fraudsters. They also called for regular drives and strict legal measures to prevent these activities.
An SSC examinee was frustrated after some papers were bad.
“I contacted them after seeing an advertisement on Facebook, wishing to convert my result to GPA-5. After taking some money they told me that I flunked two subjects. They assured me of converting the result after I give them the full money,” said the examinee, wishing not to be named.
“They also told me that they already contacted senior level officials of the [education] board. I trusted them easily as my exams were bad.
“My father already paid all money. Since then the contact number was switched off,” said the victim.
Following a number of similar complaints it was found that there are two groups of advertisers in Facebook or other apps—one group takes away all money in advance and disappears while the other group takes some money in advance and then keeps people waiting.
After a few days the advertisers tell the students they have failed in one or two subjects. Then they take the rest of the money and disappear after handing the students a copy of result manipulating it via Photoshop just one day before the results are published. But the result does not match with the one published by the board.
Fraudsters take Tk10,000-20,000 from the victims and use bKash and mobile numbers to receive the money.
Since the SSC exams results have already been published on Sunday, the advertisers are now trying to lure HSC examinees.
On April 16, the Rapid Action Battalion or RAB detained two members of a racket in Dampara area of Chattogram on charges of extorting money from people promising them to change HSC results.
Confirming the matter RAB-7 Lt Commander Ashekur Rahman said: “The duo was taking money from people giving them fake question papers and promising them to convert results using social media, including Facebook and Whatsapp.”
The two people were handed over to Chawkbazar police station after interrogation, he said.
Academic and Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) Mohammad Kaykobad said: “Guardians should be aware so that their children do not fall victims to the prey. Both the guardians and students should understand that this is not a right path.
“We should not raise our children with these wrong values. If guardians have no sense of values what will happen to their children?”
He lamented lack of enforcement of the law. “The criminals in our country enjoy impunity which is why the tendency for crime rises. If the criminals are given punishment then the number of these crimes will decrease a lot.”
Tapan Kumar Sarkar, exam controller of Dhaka Education Board, said: “These advertisements are completely hoax. Intelligence officials are active to catch the cons. Many of them have already brought to book.”
He urged people to provide information to the intelligence if they have any information about the racketeers. This article was first published on banglatribune.com
