CTTC hands over Faizul's brother to Sylhet police

Update : 13 Mar 2018, 08:25 PM
Police’s Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit has handed over the brother of Foyzur Rahman Faizul, who attacked noted author Prof Zafar Iqbal at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) on March 3, to Jalalabad police station in Sylhet city. Enamul Hasan was sent to Sylhet on Friday morning, said CTTC unit's Deputy Commissioner Mohibul Islam Khan. Jalalabad police OC Shafiqul Islam also said that they were expecting Enamul in their custody soon. Enamul, who had fled their family home after Faizul carried out the attack, was arrested by CTTC unit officials in Gazipur on Thursday evening. Police also seized a tablet, a mobile phone and a memory card from him at the time. These were previously used by Faizul, officials claimed. After the news of the attack spread and Faizul was identified, all members of his family had run away from their house. However, his father Atiqur Rahman and mother Minara Begum surrendered at Jalalabad police station the next day.

A Sylhet court on Thursday also granted police 10 days in the case to interrogate Faizul, who also claimed to be a hawker and a madrasa student. OC Shafiqul said they were trying to get all necessary details from Faizul, who also goes by Shafiqur, reports our Sylhet correspondent. “Whatever information we have gathered so far, we are not ready to divulge them to the media yet,” said the police official. Shafiqul, also the case investigation officer, said Atiqur, Minara and her brother Fazlur Rahman were detained and in their custody. Prof Zafar Iqbal, a teacher at SUST’s Computer Science and Engineering Department, was stabbed on the back of his head by Faizul last Saturday while he was delivering a speech at a program on the university campus. Faizul was caught immediately by the students and handed over to police after a severe thrashing. He later told police that he carried out the attack as he considered Zafar Iqbal “an enemy of Islam.” After receiving immediate treatment at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital on Saturday afternoon, Zafar Iqbal was airlifted to the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Dhaka that night following Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s order. The professor was shifted from the Intensive Care Unit to a cabin there on Wednesday after his physical condition improved.
