The Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime unit has also arrested his brother from Gazipur
A Sylhet court has granted police 10 days to interrogate Foyzur Rahman Faizul, who stabbed noted author and academician Prof Zafar Iqbal at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) last Saturday.
Judge Haridas Kumar of Sylhet Metropolitan Magistrate Court 3 passed the order on Thursday.
Case investigation officer Shahfiqul Islam of Jalalabad police station produced the accused before the court with a remand plea around 1:15pm.
Former president of Sylhet Bar Association Advocate Ruhul Anam Chowdhury represented Zafar Iqbal in the hearing.
Meanwhile, officers from the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit arrested Faizul’s brother, Enamul Hasan, from Gazipur and seized a tablet computer, a mobile phone and a memory card on Thursday.
Enamul had fled their Sylhet residence right after his brother had attacked Zafar Iqbal, police said.
Zafar Iqbal, a teacher at SUST’s Computer Science and Engineering Department, was stabbed on the back of his head by Faizul last Saturday while he was delivering a speech at a program on the university campus.
Faizul, a madrasa student, was caught immediately by the students and handed over to police after a severe thrashing.
He later told police that he carried out the attack as he considered Zafar Iqbal “an enemy of Islam.”
After receiving immediate treatment at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital on Saturday afternoon, Zafar Iqbal was airlifted to the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Dhaka that night following Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s order.
The professor was shifted from the Intensive Care Unit to a cabin there on Wednesday after his physical condition improved.
A team of Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime unit is currently in Sylhet to interrogate Faizul.
