Ankhi gave the confessional statement to police during his interrogation on Friday.
Md Mofiz Uddin, officer-in charge of Brahmanbaria Detective Branch (DB) of police, said: “Ankhi has confessed that he paid Tk3000 as truck rent.”
“He claimed that the demonstrators had forced him to pay for the transport and join them. He also gave up the names of those who forced him,” added the OC.
The DB official said: “We will bring all the perpetrators connected with the mayhem to book.”
The prime suspect for inciting attacks on the Hindu communities in Brahmanbaria’s Nasirnagar in October last year was arrested in Dhaka’s Bhatara area. On Thursday afternoon, Bhatara police handed over Ankhi to the Detective Branch.
More than 100 people were injured after a mob attacked and vandalised 17 temples and 58 houses belonging to Hindus over a Facebook post defaming Islam. The post had allegedly been shared on the FB page of an illiterate Hindu fisherman.
A total of 106 people have so far been arrested in eight cases filed in connection with the attacks.
The officer-in-charge of Nasirnagar police station and the upazila nirbahi officer were subsequently transferred, while the ruling Awami League suspended three of its local leaders for their involvement in the attacks.
