Customs Intelligence has arrested a man with 347gm of gold at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka.
The arrestee, Mahbubul Alam, had returned from Dubai. He is a native of Chhagalnaiya upazila of Feni district.
Acting on a tip-off, Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID) arrested Mahbubul when he was passing through the green channel of the airport. His flight EK 584 landed at the airport at 11:20pm.
Mahbubul denied the allegation of carrying illegal gold during the primary interrogation by Customs intelligence officials. Later, they seized his rechargeable LED light, and discovered that a 248gm gold disc was hidden inside.
They also found four gold bangles in his pocket, weighing 99gm, confirmed Moinul Khan, the director general (DG) of the Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID).
Mahbubul confessed that he melted the gold and inserted it in the LED light to avoid customs officials.
