Housewife killed, thrown into river over family feud

Update : 28 Sep 2017, 09:50 AM
A housewife has been strangled to death and then thrown into the Dhaleshwari River, allegedly by her husband over a family feud in the Ghior upazila of Manikganj. The deceased is Kalpana Rani, 25, daughter of Kalipada Ghosh from Tangail's Mirzapur upazila. Police have detained five people in connection with the murder, including the victim’s husband Sanjit Sumar Ghosh and her mother-in-law. Quoting locals, Sub-Inspector Md Hazrat Ali of Ghiior police station said Sanjit, son of the late Narayan Chandra Ghosh, from the upazila's Teroshree area, had regularly argued with Kalpana ever since their marriage in 2009. “Sanjit bought some clothes on the occasion of Durga Puja on Sunday afternoon, which Kalpana did not like, leading to an altercation between them. Later at night, they yet again exchanged heated words,” he said. At one stage, an outraged Sanjit strangled Kalpana and threw her corpse into the river from a Bailey bridge near the Ghior Veterinary Hospital around midnight, the police official added. Aiming to cover up the crime, he filed a general diary (GD) with the police station on Monday claiming that his wife was missing, said SI Ali. However, an investigation into the GD helped uncover the actual incident, as Sanjit turned his mobile phone off after filing the complaint and went into hiding. Police managed to detain both Sanjit and his mother from Nagorpur upazila of Tangail, and all five are currently being interrogated, the SI said As of 7pm on Wednesday, the body could not be recovered.
