RAB and police are taking special security measures during Eid-ul-Azha to protect people against attacks from Aggyan parties.
Aggyan parties, or ‘dope gangs,’ rob their victims after drugging them into unconsciousness with often fatal consequences.
An unknown man died in Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) three days after jaywalkers found him unconscious in the Science Lab area of Dhaka on August 24.
Two other men including a National Security Intelligence (NSI) officer died following such gang attacks in August while four people, including policemen and bankers, were admitted to hospital.
“Dope gang members loot general people by mixing anaesthetics drugs in their food and drinks,” Masudur Rahman, the Deputy Commissioner (media) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), said. “People should be more cautious about these things and they should strictly avoid accepting food from strangers.”
Masudur said CCTV cameras have been installed in cattle markets and both uniformed and civil police have been deployed to control unexpected incidents during Eid-ul-Azha, when huge amounts of money will change hands over cattle.
Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and police sources said there are no statistics for dope gang members, or their attacks and victims. In most cases, detained or arrested gang members are given bail and conduct the same crimes again.
“RAB is conducting raids in different areas, mostly in cattle markets and other public places, to arrest dope gang members,” RAB’s Director (legal and media wing) Mufti Mahmud Khan said.
According to different Dhaka hospital sources, at least 50 such victims have been treated in different hospitals after suffering from dope gang attacks.
