A Rangamati court has sentenced five members of the banned Islamic outfit Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) for their involvement in series bomb blasts in 2005.
Additional District and Sessions' Judge Azizul Haque handed down the verdict against Obaidur Rahman, Ariful Islam, Abdul Hafiz, Md Ayub Ali and Jabed Iqbal. The court also fined them Tk3,000 each.
The court also acquitted Ruhul Amin as allegation brought out against him could not be proved during prosecution.
According to the prosecution, the convicts exploded several bombs in front of Rangamati Press Club, Reserve Bazar Chowmuhani and Banarupa area on August 17, 2005 as part of JMB's series bomb blast across the country. On the same day, a case was filed with Kotwali police station.
Members of the JMB in an organised way blasted bombs in 64 districts of the country to demand introduction of sharia laws.
