ACC serves notice to Nur Hossain

Update : 17 Nov 2015, 08:32 PM

The Anti-Corruption Commission yesterday served two notices against Narayanganj seven-murder prime suspect Nur Hossain, asking him to submit his wealth statement.

Both the letters addressed the accused mastermind of the sensational murders. One of these notices was sent to the Kashimpur Jail and is to be served through the Jail Super Prasanta Kumar Banik.

A copy of the notice was sent to Nur Hossain’s home in Simrail of Narayanganj, to be served through his wife.

Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Public Relations Officer, Pranab Kumar Bhattacharya, confirmed this to the Dhaka Tribune yesterday.

The commission resumed inquiry into alleged amassing of illegal wealth after Nur was brought back from India three days ago.

ACC said the inquiry had to be stalled because Nur Hossain fled to India after the April 2014 murders and so he could not be summoned and interrogated. The inquiry was launched in May 2014, about a month after the murders.

The notice reads that Nur will have to submit a wealth statement to the secretary of the commission, otherwise actions will be taken according to the ACC Act 2004.

Section 26(b) of the act reads that if a recipient fails to produce the documents asked by the commission, then that person will be sentenced to a prison term of up to three years or a fine or both.

A commission official said since Nur Hossain is now in jail, he may produce the documents through his lawyer or a representative.

In initial inquiry, the anti-graft watchdog has found that he had disclosed information about wealth worth around Tk8 crore including a five-storey building, 30 long-route passenger buses and significant amount of landed property in the city.

According to the last tax return that Nur submitted to the National Board of Revenue (NBR), his annual income was Tk1.07 crore and the source of this income was fish farming. The return does not have any mentions of the buses, buildings and land that he owns.

A source said that the ACC had also found evidence that Nur Hossain, using his political muscles and backing, grabbed land for his fish farm and the building.
