A district court yesterday rejected the bail petition of Awami League MP Manjurul Islam Liton in an attempted murder case filed over the shooting of a child early this month.
Senior Judicial Magistrate Md Waheduzzaman, also acting judge of the Sundarganj Cognisance Court, passed the order in the afternoon, defence counsel Md Sirajul Islam Babu told the Dhaka Tribune.
The Sundarganj lawmaker, who has been in jail since October 15, was not produced before the court during the hearing.
The defence said that they would file a bail petition with the High Court in the attempted murder case. On October 21, the defence lawyer submitted two bail petitions – one in the attempted murder case and another in a vandalism case.
Prosecutor Md Enamul Huq said that they argued against the bail petition mentioning that the case had been filed under sections 307 and 326 of the Penal Code. The sections deal with attempted murder and voluntarily causing grievous injuries by dangerous weapons.
On October 2, eight-year-old Sourov, son of Sazu Miah of Gopalcharan village, was injured with stray bullets fired by Liton from his private arms at Sundarganj, allegedly under the influence of alcohol. Sourov’s father filed the case the following day.
The other case was filed by Hafizur Rahman of Uttor Shahbaz village under Sundarganj upazila for vandalising his house and looting valuables on October 2 night.
The Detective Branch of police arrested the ruling party lawmaker from his relative’s house in Uttara on October 14. He was produced before a Gaibandha court the following day and the court ordered him jail after rejecting the bail petition.
On that day, the supporters of MP Liton locked into a clash with the police.
Liton’s arrest came hours after the Supreme Court issued a stay order on a High Court ruling that rejected his anticipatory bail petition and ordered him to surrender before the trial court by October 18.
