Officer-in-Charge of Ashulia police station (OC) Mohsinul Kadir offered Dhaka Tribune's Staff Reporter Adil Sakhawat Tk20,000-30,000 from one of the suspects as compensation for the bike and for not filing a case.
The Dhaka Tribune reporter was on duty on the night of November 22, to cover the gas lighter factory fire in Savar’s Jirabo, when his motorcycle was stolen.
Adil had rushed to the scene along with a photographer as soon as word of the fire at Color Max (BD) Ltd had been received.
Adil parked his official Discover 100 (registration number Dhaka Metro Ha- 459481) just 500 metres away from the scene, next to a law enforcement vehicle, before going to cover news of the fire.
After finishing coverage, he returned to find that his bike was missing in spite of the presence of law enforcers, including senior police officials, members of Rapid Action Battalion, detective branch's higher officials and fire fighters.
“I immediately informed Ashulia police station's OC, and other senior police officials there about my missing bike. They seemed very active in finding my missing bike and told me to file a case the next day,” said Adil.
But the next day, when he went to Ashulia police station, the OC suggested that he file a general diary and assured him the bike would be recovered.
“After six days, when I again went to the police station to file a case, the OC refused to register a case this month and suggested I file the case next month.
“The OC also offered me Tk20,000 to Tk30,000 from one of the suspects. When I refused his offer he also refused to take the case.
”I have the recording of my conversation with the OC with me. If it is needed, I will provide the recording,” Adil said.
When contacted, the OC told the Dhaka Tribune: “Many cases have already been filed with this police station. So, the case of the journalist's missing bike will be filed on the first day of next month.”
