Seven detained for staging demo during Modi’s visit

Update : 06 Jun 2015, 08:55 PM

Police held seven activists of different leftist parties and left-leaning organisations yesterday for holding demonstrations in the capital, breaching the security measures taken by law enforcement agencies to ensure safe stay of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his two-day Dhaka visit.

Despite a restriction imposed on carrying any kind of movement during Modi’s stay,  Ganatantrik Bam Morcha and several other leftist parties took position in front of the National Press Club with banners.

On Friday evening, the parties declared to stage a demo in front of the National Press Club demanding several bilateral issues including Teesta water sharing, border killing, and transit and trade be resolved.

Activists of Mukti Council, Ganatantrik Bam Morcha, Ganatantrik Gono Morcha and National Gana Font brought out a protest procession in front of the club yesterday.

Shibli Noman, assistant commissioner of Ramna police, said: “Left activists were creating chaos which could deter security metaken for the visiting Indian prime minister.”

The arrested were kept in Ramna police station for security reasons. Legal procedure would begin against them shortly, said Saiful Islam, sub-inspector of Ramna police station.

Meanwhile, Moshrefa Mishu, general secretary of Ganatantrik Biplabi Party, has been confined inside her house in Kalabagan in the capital since Friday night following the announcement of staging demo by the left leaning organisations. Police also seized her cell phone, claimed her party leaders.
