Testimony in a case against 28 people, including Awami League Presidium Member Jahangir Kabir Nanak and former Dhaka South City Corporation mayor Barrister Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh, over killings in Mohammadpur during the July 2024 mass uprising has been deferred.

Following a time petition from the prosecution, International Crimes Tribunal-1 on Thursday fixed October 12 for the next hearing.

The prosecution was scheduled to record the deposition of the 10th prosecution witness on Thursday, and the witness was present at the tribunal. However, prosecutors sought more time as an investigation officer was scheduled to testify in another case.

The tribunal then set October 12 for recording the witness’s deposition.

Earlier, the prosecution submitted the formal charge against the 28 accused in the Mohammadpur case. Four of them are currently in custody: former Ansar member Mohammad Omar Faruk, Mohammadpur thana Chhatra League president Naimul Hasan Russell, its former vice-president Md Sazzad Hossain, and Jubo League activist KM Fazle Rabbi.

The absconding accused include former Dhaka Metropolitan Police commissioner Habibur Rahman, former Police Headquarters additional DIG Prolay Kumar Joardar, former DMP joint commissioner Biplob Kumar Sarker and former Mohammadpur zone ADC Roushanul Haque Saikat.

Among the political figures accused are Dhaka North City Awami League President Sheikh Bazlur Rahman, organising secretary Azizul Haque, Mohammadpur thana Awami League President MA Sattar and General Secretary Md Tofail Siddiq, and Dhaka North Jubo League General Secretary Md Ismail Hossain.

The list also includes former councillors Asif Ahmed and Syed Hasan-Nur-Islam, Ward 33 Jubo League joint general secretary Tarequzzaman Rajib, Nanak’s personal assistant Md Masudur Rahman Biplob, Dhaka North Chhatra League president Riaz Mahmud Hridoy, former Mohammadpur thana Chhatra League general secretary Ayman Wasek, Dhanmondi thana Jubo League joint general secretary Ahad Hossain Sohag, and Ward 33 Awami League leaders Md Sentu and Mohammad Mainul Islam.

The other accused are Mohammadpur resident Zahir Uddin Ahmed, who allegedly attacked protesters with firearms; Md Yunus, an alleged armed member of the so-called “helmet force”; and Md Rubel Hossain, an associate of former councillor Asif Ahmed.

The accused have been charged with the killings of Residential Model College Class XI student Farhan Faiyaz, Md Mahin Mia and Md Rony in Dhanmondi and Mohammadpur on July 18, 2024, during the mass uprising.

The charges also allege that Al Shahriar Hossain, Md Raju Ahmed, Mahamudur Rahman Saikat, Md Ismail, Md Jasim Uddin and Jobayed Hossain Emon were killed in the same areas the following day.
