A Dhaka court on Monday placed two airline staffers on a five-day remand in a case filed over the seizure of 80 gold bars weighing 9.34kg from their shoes at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ripon Hossain passed the order after investigation officer Inspector Abul Kayum sought a 10-day remand for the accused.
The remanded accused are Manik Mia and Mizanur Rahman.
Prosecution department Sub-Inspector Abu Bakar Siddique confirmed the matter.
According to the case statement, Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate officials took position at the airport on Sunday following a tip-off. They searched the two staffers after noticing their suspicious movements on the runway following the arrival of Emirates flight EK582 from Dubai.
The search led to the recovery of 80 gold bars concealed inside their shoes. Each bar weighed around 117 grams, bringing the total weight to 9.34kg. The gold is estimated to be worth Tk16.25 crore.
The Customs Intelligence and Investigation Circle at the airport filed the case with Airport Police Station on Sunday under the Special Powers Act.
The court later granted a five-day remand for each accused.
