A formal complaint has been filed with the Office of the Chief Prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal seeking justice for the murders of journalist couple Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Runi.
Runi’s brother, Naosher Roman, submitted the complaint to Chief Prosecutor Md Aminul Islam on Sunday.
According to the complaint, Sagar Sarowar, news editor of Maasranga Television, and Meherun Runi, a senior correspondent at ATN Bangla, were murdered in their rented apartment in the capital’s West Rajabazar area between 2am and 7am on February 11, 2012.
Despite the passage of 14 years, multiple investigative agencies have failed to identify the perpetrators or make significant progress in the case, the complaint said.
It said local police, the Detective Branch (DB) and the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) had failed to make progress after the murders. The High Court subsequently directed the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) to take over the case.
However, even after the PBI investigation, the case remains unresolved, according to the complaint.
The family has therefore sought a fair and proper investigation through the International Crimes Tribunal to identify the perpetrators and bring them to justice.
The complaint also sought exemplary punishment for those responsible and requested that it be formally registered so that legal proceedings can be initiated.
