Three accused in a case over the beating death of Special Branch (SB) Sub-Inspector Altaf Hossain at Aminbazar in Dhaka have given confessional statements before a court, while two others have been placed on five-day remand.
The three, Jahurul, Apon and Jihad, gave their confessional statements on Thursday.
Investigation Officer of the case and SI Md Zakir Al-Ahsan of the Aminbazar Police Camp under Savar Model Police Station produced the accused before the court and sought to have their statements recorded after they agreed to confess.
Senior Judicial Magistrate Tajul Islam Sohag recorded the statements of Jahurul and Apon, while Judicial Magistrate Tanvir Ahmed recorded Jihad’s statement. The court subsequently ordered them to be sent to jail.
Meanwhile, Senior Judicial Magistrate Ayesha Siddika placed Kashem Ali and Dadi Al Faiyet Jit on five-day remand for questioning.
Police arrested Kashem from the Baratali Sagarna area of Moulvibazar Sadar around 4:30pm on Tuesday and Jit from the Amratali area under Comilla Sadar Police Station.
They were produced before the court on Wednesday, when police sought 10-day remand. The court sent them to jail and fixed Thursday for the remand hearing.
Assistant Sub-Inspector Abu Bakkar Siddique said defence lawyers sought cancellation of the remand and bail for the accused, while the prosecution sought the maximum remand. After hearing both sides, the court granted five-day remand.
On Tuesday, the court granted five-day remand for Md Alauddin, 29, Md Apon, 26, Md Jihad, 23, Imran Hossain, 25, Nur Mohammad Rudra, 24, and Md Golam Rabbi, 22. Billal, 34, and Delwar, 33, were placed on three-day remand.
Earlier, Jahurul, the prime accused, was placed on five-day remand on Monday, while Rakib Mia, Sabbir Ahmed and Wasim were placed on three-day remand on Wednesday.
According to the case statement, an altercation broke out around 7:30pm on September 5 over the parking of an auto-rickshaw in front of Abul Kalam Azad’s garage in West Baradevi, Savar.
Altaf Hossain tried to intervene but came under attack. He took shelter at his son Ariful Islam’s business establishment, Grand Fashion.
Around 8:10pm, the accused allegedly attacked Altaf with locally made weapons, beating him indiscriminately with rods, pipes, hammers and sticks and leaving him critically injured.
When Ariful tried to rescue his father, the attackers allegedly hacked him with sharp weapons.
The accused also allegedly vandalised the business establishment, causing damage worth Tk5 lakh, and took away Tk2.20 lakh in cash, according to the case statement.
