Detective Branch (DB) police on Tuesday questioned two accused at the jail gate in connection with the brutal killing of four members of a family, including schoolteacher Ganapati Chakraborty, in Rangpur.
A three-member team of Rangpur Metropolitan Police’s DB, led by the case’s investigating officer and DB Officer-in-Charge (OC) Jinnat Ali, arrived at Rangpur Central Jail around noon to question the two accused, Mugdha Das and Siddhartha Das.
Following a court order, the officers interrogated the accused for three hours before leaving the jail.
Jinnat Ali did not respond to journalists’ questions about whether any new information had emerged during the interrogation or what the accused had said. He instead asked reporters to visit the metropolitan DB office for further details.
At the Rangpur Metropolitan DB office near Payra Chattar, journalists were initially told that police headquarters had instructed officials not to comment to the media.
Later, Additional Police Commissioner (Crime and Operations) Tofayel Ahmed said investigators were close to unravelling the mystery behind the killings.
Speaking briefly to reporters, he said Tuesday was the first day of the court-approved interrogation of the two accused at the jail gate.
“We will take the next course of action after completing the questioning,” he said.
On Monday, investigating officer and DB OC Jinnat Ali sought permission from the court to interrogate the accused in connection with the four-murder case.
After hearing the application, Rangpur Metropolitan Magistrate Rafiqul Islam rejected the police’s remand plea but allowed the two accused to be questioned at the jail gate for three hours a day over two days.
As part of the court order, the accused were questioned on Tuesday and are scheduled to face another round of questioning at the jail gate on Wednesday.
