A Dhaka court has sentenced a man to life imprisonment for stabbing Biplob alias Bashir to death over Tk20 in Gopibagh, Demra, now under Wari police station, 25 years ago.
Judge Zahidul Islam of Dhaka Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court-13 delivered the verdict on Sunday.
The court also fined Monir Hossain Tk20,000, with three months of rigorous imprisonment in default, said court bench assistant Sohel Mia.
As Monir has been absconding, the court issued an arrest warrant against him as well as a warrant for execution of the sentence, Sohel said.
According to the case documents, on December 4, 2001. Monir stabbed Biplob alias Bashir, 18, in different parts of his body.
Hearing Biplob scream, one Nazir Ahmed, who was at a nearby mosque, and several others caught Monir. Biplob was taken to Monowara Hospital and later shifted to National Hospital, where the attending physician declared him dead.
Nazir Ahmed filed a murder case with Demra police station the same day. Monir was subsequently arrested and sent to jail.
After investigating the case, Demra police station Sub-Inspector A Jabbar submitted a charge sheet against Monir on March 31, 2002.
The investigation found that Biplob had borrowed Tk20 from Monir and that Monir killed him after Biplob failed to repay the money.
The court framed charges against Monir on September 3, 2002, and began the trial. During the proceedings, the court recorded the statements of five witnesses.
Monir was granted bail in 2009. However, after he remained absent, the court cancelled his bail and issued an arrest warrant on October 31, 2013.
As Monir remained absconding, he could not participate in the hearing of his defence.
