The High Court has granted eight weeks’ anticipatory bail to Gazi Nazrul Islam, the Satkhira-4 constituency MP expelled from Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, in an attempted murder case filed at Pallabi police station in the capital.
The High Court bench comprising Justice KM Zahid Sarwar and Justice Sheikh Abu Taher passed the order on Monday after hearing his petition.
Senior lawyer SM Shahjahan argued the bail petition on behalf of the accused before the court.
Earlier, on July 21, an attempted murder case was filed at Pallabi police station in the capital against five people, including Gazi Nazrul Islam, the Satkhira-4 constituency MP expelled from Jamaat-e-Islami following the incident involving the viral video of a “personal moment.”
The case was filed by Obaidur Rahman, the personal driver of the MP. Obaidur Rahman is the maternal uncle of the woman whom the MP has introduced as his second wife.
Obaidur alleged that he was beaten for protesting against the MP’s “immoral relationship” and on suspicion that he was involved in leaking a video.
Besides Nazrul, four of his associates have been made accused in the case. They are Aminur Rahman, Masum Billah, Mostasim Billah and Rakibul Hasan.
