A Dhaka court on Tuesday sent renowned folk singer, composer and music director Mujib Pardeshi to jail in a Tk10 lakh cheque dishonour case.

Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Sefatullah passed the order after police produced the accused before the court.
Idris Ali Biswas filed the case with Magura court in 2022.

On March 15, 2023, the 2nd Joint District and Sessions Judge of Magura Muhammad Anwar Sadat sentenced Pardeshi to one year's rigorous imprisonment and fined him Tk10 lakh, the value of the dishonoured cheque.

As he remained absconding, the court subsequently issued an arrest warrant against him. Police from Uttara West Police Station arrested Pardeshi on Monday.

SI Helal Uddin of the prosecution division said police sought an order to keep the accused in custody after producing him before the court. The court ordered that he be sent to jail.

No lawyer appeared on behalf of Pardeshi during the hearing. However, the complainant's counsel Shafiqul Islam opposed bail, arguing that the accused had remained absconding despite being aware of the case and had shown disregard for the legal process. He urged the court to reject the bail petition, saying Pardeshi's release could prejudice the complainant's interests.

Mujib Pardeshi, whose real name is Mujibur Rahman Molla, is a renowned Bangladeshi folk singer, composer and music director. He rose to prominence in the 1980s with his Bengali folk and traditional songs.
