A Dhaka court on Tuesday sent two madrasa teachers to jail in a murder case filed over the death of a 13-year-old student whose body was recovered from a washroom at a madrasa in the capital's Kadamtali area.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Hasibuzzaman passed the order after the investigation officer produced the accused before the court and sought their detention pending investigation.
SI Abdus Sabur of the Dhaka Metropolitan Court's Prosecution Division confirmed the matter.
The accused are Hafez Md Zakaria, 35, and Hafez Md Zobayer Ahmed, 20, teachers at Rowajatul Ulum Hafezia Nurani Madrasa in the Jorakhamba area of Rayerbagh.
According to court sources, the investigation officer and Sub-Inspector Amzad Hossain of Kadamtali Police Station produced the two accused before the court and sought an order to keep them in jail. No lawyer appeared on behalf of the accused during the hearing.
The body of 13-year-old Md Naeem Sheikh was recovered from a third-floor washroom of the madrasa on Monday afternoon.
Later that day, the victim's mother Nazma Begum filed a murder case with Kadamtali Police Station against the two teachers. Police arrested them from the madrasa the same night.
According to the first information report (FIR), Nazma's two sons studied at the madrasa, where Naeem was allegedly subjected to repeated physical abuse by the accused teachers.
The FIR states that after learning about the alleged abuse, Nazma sought to withdraw her son from the madrasa, but the teachers refused to issue him a transfer certificate.
It further alleges that at around 1:00pm on Monday, Naeem told the teachers he no longer wanted to study at the madrasa. He was allegedly beaten and forcibly confined before being strangled to death between 1:00pm and 2:30pm, according to the complaint.
