A Dhaka court on Monday showed former managing director (MD) of Somoy Television Ahmed Zobayer arrested in a case filed over the alleged embezzlement of approximately Tk2.33 crore and the misappropriation of two company-owned vehicles.
The court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Israt Jahan also rejected his bail petition and ordered that he be sent to jail.
Zobayer was produced before the court after the investigation officer sought permission to show him arrested as a named accused in the case.
Defence counsel Farhad Hossain Niyon opposed the application, arguing that his client should not be shown arrested, while the complainant's lawyer urged the court to allow the plea.
Following arguments from both sides, the court reserved its order and subsequently allowed the application to show Zobayer arrested, while rejecting his bail petition after examining the case records.

According to the case statement, Zobayer allegedly withdrew Tk2.33 crore from Somoy Television's funds in violation of company regulations while serving as a managing director. After he was relieved of his duties, the company asked him to return the money along with two vehicles provided for official use. However, he allegedly refused to hand over either the funds or the vehicles.
The complaint further states that City Group, the owner of Somoy Television, served him with a legal notice demanding the return of the money and vehicles, but he failed to respond. The case was subsequently filed before the cognisance court under New Market Police Station in Dhaka.
Earlier, on June 18, Zobayer surrendered before a Dhaka court and sought bail in a separate case filed over allegations of fraud and forgery. The court rejected his bail petition in that case as well and ordered him to be sent to jail.
