The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) is set to deliver its verdict on Sunday in the crimes against humanity case against five people, including former Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Habibur Rahman, over the killing of two people during the July Mass Uprising, including the fatal shooting of a youth who was seen hanging from a building cornice in Rampura.

Prosecutor Gazi MH Tamim confirmed the matter on Saturday.

On June 15, after hearing closing arguments from both sides, the three-member bench of ICT-1, led by Justice Md Golam Mortuza Majumder, fixed June 28 for delivering the verdict.

During the final hearing, defence counsel Sarwar Jahan Nippon argued on behalf of former assistant sub-inspector (ASI) of Rampura Police Outpost Chanchal Chandra Sarkar, claiming his client had no involvement in the incident. Chief Prosecutor Aminul Islam, representing the prosecution, sought the maximum punishment for all five accused.

Following the hearing, the tribunal fixed Sunday for pronouncing the verdict.

On June 10, Chanchal gave additional defence testimony and also made allegations against one of the prosecutors. He had earlier testified on January 13.

Chanchal is the only accused currently in custody. The remaining four are absconding. They are former DMP Commissioner Habibur Rahman, former assistant deputy commissioner (ADC) of Khilgaon Zone Md Rashedul Islam, former Rampura Police Station officer-in-charge (OC) Md Mashiur Rahman, and former sub-inspector (SI) Tarikul Islam Bhuiyan.

The prosecution submitted formal charges on August 7, 2025. On September 18, ICT-1 framed charges against the five accused and ordered the trial to begin.

The tribunal had initially scheduled the verdict for March 4. However, the prosecution later sought permission to submit fresh digital evidence, prompting the tribunal to recall the first prosecution witness, Amir Hossain, for further testimony before concluding the trial.
