The High Court has granted anticipatory bail to Mufti Ameer Hamza, a lawmaker from the Kushtia-3 constituency representing Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, in a defamation case.
A High Court bench comprising Justice Zahid Sarwar Kajal and Justice Sheikh Abu Taher passed the order on Monday after hearing a petition filed on his behalf.
Senior lawyer Mohammad Shishir Monir represented the petitioner in court.
According to case details, the allegations stem from remarks made by Ameer Hamza during a discussion ahead of a Friday prayer sermon at Hatsh Haripur Boro Jame Mosque in Kushtia Sadar upazila. The remarks were reportedly made in the context of a speech delivered by Iqbal Hasan Mahmud, adviser on power, energy and mineral resources, on March 26, marking the significance of the Bangladesh Liberation War and honouring freedom fighters.
Following the incident, a defamation case was filed on April 2 in Sirajganj by Humayun Kabir, additional public prosecutor of the district judge’s court and general secretary of the District Bar Association.
A summons was later issued for Ameer Hamza to appear before the court. However, when he failed to appear on the scheduled date, the court issued an arrest warrant against him.
