HC Justice Mamnoon Rahman resigns

Citing personal reasons, he submitted his resignation letter to the President

Update : 02 Feb 2026, 06:20 PM

Justice Mamnoon Rahman of the High Court Division of the Supreme Court has resigned after remaining away from judicial duties for more than a year.

Citing personal reasons, he submitted his resignation letter to the President.

On Monday, the resignation letter was received by email by the Office of the Registrar General of the Supreme Court and the Ministry of Law.

According to relevant sources, Justice Mamnoon Rahman, who is currently residing in Canada, sent his resignation from there.

It is reported that Justice Mamnoon Rahman had been absent from his workplace without leave for over a year. Following a review of various allegations against him and his prolonged absence, the Supreme Judicial Council sent an investigation report to the President recommending appropriate action. Previously, based on the Council’s recommendations, the President had removed three other justices of the High Court Division.

After the political changes in the country on August 5, 2024, twelve justices of the High Court Division were initially placed on leave. Of those twelve, nine justices are no longer in office—some were sent into compulsory retirement following investigations by the Supreme Judicial Council, some resigned voluntarily, and others retired in the normal course. The remaining three justices are still in office but are not assigned to any bench.

It may be noted that, following the submission of a complaint to the Supreme Judicial Council, Justice M R Hasan was also placed on leave earlier this month. In addition to the thirteen justices currently on leave, two other justices had been voluntarily absent from their duties—Justice Mamnoon Rahman was one of them.
