A Dhaka court on Monday ordered the discharge of actress Mehazabien Chowdhury and her brother Alishan Chowdhury in a case filed on allegations of intimidation.

The order was passed by Dhaka Executive Magistrate Md Adnan Zulfiqar, confirmed defence lawyer Tuhin Hawladar.

According to the defence, Monday was fixed for submitting a reply in the case. Mehazabien Chowdhury appeared before the court in the morning along with her brother, while the plaintiff was also present. After hearing arguments from both sides, the court discharged the two accused.

Earlier, on November 16, Mehazabien Chowdhury and Alishan Chowdhury had surrendered before the court and were granted bail by Dhaka Executive Magistrate Court-3 Judge Afroza Haque Tania.

According to the complaint, the accused allegedly took Tk27 lakh from the plaintiff in cash and through bKash at different times, promising to include her as a partner in a new family business of Mehazabien Chowdhury. The plaintiff alleged that despite repeated assurances, the accused did not initiate the business and kept delaying the return of the money.

The complaint further states that when the plaintiff demanded the money back on February 11, she was asked to meet at a restaurant near Hatirjheel Road on March 16. Upon going there, Mehazabien Chowdhury, her brother and four to five unidentified individuals allegedly abused and threatened the plaintiff, warning her not to come to their house again to ask for the money and threatening to kill her if she did so.

The plaintiff later approached Bhatara Police Station to resolve the matter and was advised to file a case in court. Subsequently, Amirul Islam filed the case with the Dhaka Executive Magistrate’s Court.
