Adviser to BNP Chairperson and Supreme Court Senior Advocate Fazlur Rahman has submitted a written apology following allegations of contempt of court for making adverse comments about the International Crimes Tribunal.
Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam informed reporters at the tribunal premises on Wednesday that Fazlur Rahman has unconditionally sought forgiveness from the tribunal.
A hearing on the matter is scheduled for December 8. Fazlur Rahman admitted forgetting his remarks and expressed a desire for the court’s mercy.
Earlier, the tribunal had ordered Fazlur Rahman to appear in person on December 8 to explain the contempt allegation.
On November 30, a two-member judicial panel, headed by Tribunal-1 Chairman Justice Md Golam Mortuza Majumder and retired district and sessions judge Mohitul Haque Enam Chowdhury, issued the order.
The prosecution, represented by Prosecutor Mizanul Islam and Gazi MH Tamim, filed charges citing three reasons: challenges to the tribunal’s jurisdiction, claims of 'internal arrangements' affecting impartiality, and derogatory comments on prosecutions.
The first hearing was held on November 26, followed by a summons on November 30 requesting Fazlur Rahman to present himself along with his academic and bar council certificates.
On November 23, Fazlur Rahman appeared on a Channel 24 talk show, where he made remarks about Sheikh Hasina’s verdict. The prosecution submitted the 49-minute show to the tribunal, and portions of his speech were reviewed during proceedings.
