The state has filed a petition seeking a stay on the High Court order that granted bail to former Narayanganj City Corporation mayor Selina Hayat Ivy in five cases, including the one over the killing of garment worker Minarul Islam during the anti-discrimination student movement.

The petition was submitted on Sunday to the relevant branch of the Appellate Division’s Chamber Judge Court.

Earlier in the day, the High Court granted bail to Selina Hayat Ivy in the five cases.

The bench of Justice ASM Abdul Mobin and Justice Sagir Hossain delivered the verdict, making the rule issued in this regard absolute. Barrister Sara Hossain appeared for Ivy in court.

On July 20, 2024, garment worker Minarul Islam was shot during the anti-discrimination student movement in the Adamjee area. He was taken to Narayanganj’s 300-bed Khanpur Hospital, where doctors declared him dead. The following day, he was buried in his village home.

On September 23, Minarul’s brother Nazmul Haque filed a murder case with Siddhirganj Police Station, naming 132 people, including Sheikh Hasina, and around 300 unidentified others. Selina Hayat Ivy was listed as the 12th accused in the case. She was later named in additional cases.

On May 9, police arrested Ivy from her home in West Deovog, Narayanganj, in connection with a murder case. The court subsequently sent her to jail. After a two-day remand in the Minarul murder case, she was again ordered to be sent to jail on May 27.

Later, the court rejected her bail petition in the Minarul murder case filed during the anti-discrimination student movement. Ivy then appealed to the High Court, which issued a rule and eventually granted her bail by making the rule absolute.
