A tribunal has sentenced a man to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment in a case of attempted rape of a six-year-old child in Hatirjheel, Dhaka.
Judge Sabera Sultana Khanam of the Dhaka Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-7 delivered the verdict on Monday, reports Bangla Tribune.
At the time of the verdict, the accused, Md Shukur Ali Sheikh, 35, was brought from jail to the court.
After the verdict was announced, he was returned to prison under a warrant of punishment.
Along with the imprisonment, the accused was fined Tk20,000, and in case of non-payment, an additional three months of rigorous imprisonment was imposed.
Shukur is the son of the late Ekhlas Sheikh from Londonpur village in Rajbari Sadar.
The public prosecutor of the tribunal, Advocate Md Abul Kalam Azad, and Assistant Public Prosecutor Md Shamsuzzaman Dipu shared the information.
Expressing satisfaction with the verdict, Abul said: "In the case of attempted rape, the accused Shukur has been given the maximum punishment of 10 years rigorous imprisonment under Section 9(4)(kha) of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act by the judge. We are satisfied with this verdict."
According to the case details, on May 21, 2021, Shukur attempted to rape a six-year-old child inside a rickshaw garage in Hatirjheel.
Later, the child was released after crying and told her mother about the incident, following which the survivor’s father filed a case with the Hatirjheel police station the next day.
The case was investigated, and charge sheets were submitted to the court by the Hatirjheel police on October 13, 2021.
During the trial, the tribunal recorded the testimonies of six witnesses.
