Charges could not be submitted as Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam was occupied with official duties

Formal charges in the murder case of Abu Sayed, a student of Begum Rokeya University who was killed during the July uprising in Rangpur, have not yet been submitted to the International Crimes Tribunal.

The charges could not be submitted as Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam was occupied with official duties.

The charges were scheduled to be formally submitted to the International Crimes Tribunal-2 on Sunday morning.

At around 10:30am, International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) Prosecutor Gazi Monowar Hossain Tamim sent a message to the WhatsApp group of journalists covering the tribunal.

In the message, he wrote: “The formal charge in the Abu Sayed case will not be submitted today as the chief prosecutor sir is busy with important government work.”

Earlier, on Tuesday, the investigation agency of the tribunal submitted the investigation report on the Abu Sayed murder case to the chief prosecutor's office.

The report named 30 individuals as accused in the case, including former proctor of Begum Rokeya University Shariful Islam, former assistant sub-inspector of police Amir Hossain, former constable Sujan Chandra Roy, and Imran Chowdhury, a leader of the banned organization Bangladesh Chhatra League.

Abu Sayed, a 12th-batch student of Begum Rokeya University's English Department, was killed during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement on the afternoon of July 16, 2024—thus becoming the first student killed in police firing during the July uprising.
