An accused in a murder case has escaped from the court of Dhaka’s Third Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court.
The accused fled while being taken from the courtroom to the lock-up, assaulting the police in the process, on Thursday.
The accused, Md Shariful Islam, 22, is the son of the late Shafik Ahmed from Haripur village under Nawabganj police station in Dinajpur. He has been indicted in the murder case of Jisan Hossain, 14, under Khilgaon police station in the capital.
The case is currently at the stage of witness testimony.
Shortly after 11:30am, Shariful, escaped after attacking the police constable on duty, Md Shahidullah, in the concerned court, confirmed SI Ripon, the in charge of the court lock-up.
He said: "While the accused was being taken from the court to the lock-up, he attacked the police official and escaped."
DMP Prosecution Division ADC Main Uddin said: “The accused was handcuffed. Using a piece of metal, he loosened and cleverly removed the handcuffs. Then, he struck the police constable and fled.”
He further said: “We are taking legal action. Kotwali police have been informed to arrest the accused. Preparations for filing a case against him are underway.”
