SC to deliver verdict on Jamaat's registration appeal on June 1

On October 2024, the Appellate Division revived a previously dismissed appeal filed by Jamaat-e-Islami to regain its registration as a political party

The Appellate Division on Wednesday set June 1 for delivering its judgment on the appeal filed by Jamaat-e-Islami seeking the restoration of its registration as a political party.

A four-member bench of the Appellate Division, led by Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed, passed the order after hearing legal arguments from both sides.

Senior Advocate Ehsan Siddique and Advocate Mohammad Shishir Monir represented the petitioner.

On October 22, 2024, the Appellate Division revived a previously dismissed appeal filed by Jamaat-e-Islami to regain its registration as a political party.

Earlier, on August 1, 2013, the High Court declared Jamaat's registration illegal following the disposal of a writ petition. Subsequently, on December 7, 2018, the Election Commission issued a gazette notification cancelling the party's registration.

Jamaat-e-Islami later appealed against the High Court verdict. However, in November 2023, the Appellate Division dismissed the appeal, as Jamaat’s lead counsel was absent during the hearing.

This effectively upheld the High Court's decision declaring the party's registration invalid.

Meanwhile, the then Awami League government banned Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir on August 1, 2024.

The Ministry of Home Affairs issued a notification under Section 18(1) of the Anti-Terrorism Act, banning Jamaat, Islami Chhatra Shibir, and other affiliated organizations.

However, on August 28, 2024, the ban was revoked through another gazette notification.
