A Dhaka court on Friday granted a five-day remand for Meheraj Islam, the prime accused in the murder case of Primeasia University student Zahidul Islam Parvez.
The order was issued by Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mehera Mahbub after Meheraj was produced before the court by Banani police station Inspector AKM Main Uddin, the investigation officer of the case, who sought a ten-day remand.
The defence counsel filed a petition seeking cancellation of the remand. Following the hearing, the court approved a five-day remand.
According to court sources, Meheraj Islam was arrested in Gaibandha on Wednesday. With this, a total of four individuals have been placed on remand in connection with the high-profile murder case. In addition, two others have given confessional statements.
It was learnt that Zahidul Islam Parvez was a third-year student of the Textile department at Primeasia University. On the afternoon of April 19, a clash broke out between students of the university’s English and Textile Engineering departments. At one stage of the incident, Parvez was killed.
On April 20, Parvez’s cousin, Humayun Kabir, filed a case with Banani police station. The case named eight individuals as accused, including three students from the university’s LLB and English departments—Mahathi, Meherab, and Abuzar Gifari.
Additionally, 20 to 30 unidentified individuals were also made accused in the case.
The case statement detailed that on April 19, Parvez had gone to sit for his midterm exam. After the exam, he was chatting and laughing with friends at a nearby food stall.
At around 3pm, the first three accused allegedly questioned Parvez about his laughter, leading to an argument. The matter was initially resolved by several teachers, including the university proctor.
However, at around 4:40pm, both the named and unnamed accused returned armed with knives, machetes, and sticks, and launched an attack on Parvez and his friends. Parvez sustained severe injuries and was later declared dead at the hospital.
