The High Court has acquitted former state minister for home affairs Lutfuzzaman Babar in a case filed in 2007 over the alleged recovery of illegal weapons from his residence during the caretaker government.

A bench comprising Justice Mostafa Zaman Islam and Justice Nasrin Akhter delivered the verdict on Wednesday. Advocate Mohammad Shishir Monir represented Babar in court.

The case was filed at Gulshan police station on June 3, 2007, after authorities claimed to have seized illegal weapons and ammunition from Babar’s bedroom in Gulshan on May 28, 2007.

Later that year, on October 30, Dhaka Metropolitan Special Tribunal-9 sentenced him to 17 years in prison. Babar appealed the verdict in the High Court the same year.

Babar was arrested on May 28, 2007, and remained in prison for nearly 17 years. He was convicted in multiple cases over the years but was eventually acquitted and granted bail in those cases.

Following his release from Dhaka Central Jail on January 16, this arms case remained under a High Court stay order, which has now resulted in his full acquittal.
