The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court (SC) on Thursday stayed a High Court order granting bail to former additional attorney general Mohammad Mehedi Hasan Chowdhury in connection with a murder case linked to the July-August mass uprising.
“Stay till the filing of the regular leave petition,” said the order issued by the full bench of the Appellate Division, headed by Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed.
The court passed the order in response to a petition filed by the state challenging the High Court's decision.
Attorney General Md Asaduzzaman and Additional Attorney General Aneek Rushd Haque represented the state, while senior lawyers Joynul Abedin, Barrister Kayser Kamal, and Advocate Gazi Kamrul Islam Sajal argued for the Supreme Court Bar Council. Senior lawyer ZI Khan Panna also represented the former Additional Attorney General during the hearing.
The High Court had granted six months of bail to Chowdhury on November 19.
Police detained Mohammad Mehedi Hasan Chowdhury on September 20 while he was allegedly attempting to flee to India. He was subsequently shown arrested in the case.
Chowdhury had resigned from his post on August 8.
