The Supreme Court has granted Nobel laureate and Grameen Telecom Chairman Dr Muhammad Yunus, chief adviser of the interim government, permission to appeal against the rejection of his petition challenging the legality of charges framed in a case involving the misappropriation of employee dividends.
On Monday, the Appellate Division, led by Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed, issued this ruling.
Barrister Abdullah Al Mamun represented Yunus in court, while Attorney General Md Asaduzzaman appeared for the state.
Previously, on July 24, the High Court rejected Dr Yunus’s petition challenging the legality of the charges in the case regarding the misappropriation of Grameen Telecom employees’ dividends. The High Court also directed the trial court concerned to dispose of the case within one year.
Following that ruling, Dr Yunus appealed to the Appellate Division.
Dr Yunus had initially filed the petition with the High Court seeking the dismissal of the charges framed against him in the case related to the alleged misappropriation of Grameen Telecom employees' dividends.
On June 12, the trial court had framed charges against Dr Yunus and 13 others in the case.
