Former minister of environment, forest and climate change Saber Hossain Chowdhury has been placed on a five-day remand in connection with a case related to the death of a BNP activist named Mokbul.
The remand order was issued on Monday by a Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate's court.
Earlier, the investigating officer of the case, sub-inspector Nazmul Hasan of Paltan Model police station, filed a petition seeking a 10-day remand for Saber Hossain.
The defense lawyer opposed the remand and applied for bail, while the prosecution argued in favor of the remand.
After hearing arguments from both sides, Dhaka's Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Mahbubur Rahman granted a five-day remand.
On Sunday, Saber Hossain Chowdhury was arrested by Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Police (DB) from the Gulshan area of the capital.
Saber Hossain Chowdhury, an Awami League leader, previously served as a Member of Parliament representing Dhaka-9 constituency. Prior to this, he served as the Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Shipping during the 7th National Parliament.
According to the case statement, on December 10, 2022, when BNP activists from across the country were gathering for a movement to demand a one-point agenda, the accused allegedly decided to disrupt the BNP rally.
On December 7, 2022, 500 to 600 unidentified individuals created a reign of terror in front of the BNP's central office. The accused allegedly entered the BNP office and vandalized it.
