A Dhaka court has rejected the bail application of Bhorer Kagoj Editor Shyamal Dutta and ordered his detention in a case related to the murder of a youth named Fazlu in the capital’s Vasantek area.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mahbub Ahmed issued the order on Monday after a hearing.
Shyamal Dutta was produced in court following a seven-day remand. His lawyer, Shyamal Kanti Sarkar, applied for bail on his behalf, but the prosecution opposed the plea.
After hearing arguments from both sides, the court denied the bail request and ordered Dutta to be sent to jail.
The court had previously granted a seven-day remand for Dutta on September 17.
According to the case details, following the fall of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina's government, thousands of people took to the streets to celebrate on August 5. Fazlu was killed during an attack and shooting allegedly carried out by Awami League activists in Mirpur-14 under Vasantek police station at around 7pm. His brother subsequently filed a case against 165 individuals, including Sheikh Hasina.
