A petition was lodged with a Chittagong court on Tuesday, accusing 16 individuals, including the Senior Jail Superintendent of Chittagong Central Jail, over torturing an inmate to death.
Purobi Palit, the deceased's wife, filed the petition with the Chittagong Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court, according to the family’s lawyer, Ajoy Dhar.
The court has considered the allegations and scheduled the next hearing, Ajoy said.
The accused include Chittagong Central Jail’s Senior Superintendent Muhammad Manjur Hossain, Jailer Mohammad Emran Hossain Miah, Deputy Jailers Nowshad Miah, Akherul Islam, Sumaiya Khatun, Ibrahim, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Boalkhali police station Md Ashab Uddin, Inspector (Investigation) Md Saiful Islam, Sub-Inspectors Abu Musa, Md Saiful Islam, Rizaul Jabbar, duty officer, constables Kamal, Asadullah, and two ward masters of the jail.
The complaint detailed that on January 27, a Boalkhali police station team, led by SI Musa, arrested 38-year-old Rubel Dey from his home in Dakshin Joustpura village without a warrant.
Following the arrest, the police allegedly demanded Tk2 lakh from Dey’s family for his release, which the family refused.
Later, the police accused him of possessing 200 litres of liquor and filed a case against him that same night.
The following morning, SI Rizaul Jabbar presented Dey before a court, displaying visible injury marks. The court then ordered his transfer to Chittagong Central Jail.
On visiting the jail on February 2, Dey’s family reported finding him in a grave condition, although he was in good health at the time of his arrest.
Rubel Dey died in jail on the night of February 4, with his family alleging that he was tortured to death.
