The High Court in a full text verdict observed that the veteran photojournalist and Ekushey Padak winner Aftab Ahmed was brutally killed by convicted people for a small amount of money.

The observation was made by the High Court bench of Justice Jahangir Hossain Selim and Justice Md Bashirullah in its full verdict delivered on Tuesday, accepting the death reference and dismissing the appeal of the convicted people.

Attorney General AM Amin Uddin and Deputy Attorney General Samira Tarannum Rabeya appeared for the state in the court.

The High Court said in the verdict, the convicts Humayun Kabir Mollah, Raju Munshi, Habib Howlader, Billal Hossain Kislu and Rasel murdered the photojournalist over money.

The charges brought against the convicted people have been proved beyond doubt. These criminals cannot get any kind of mercy and grace. These criminals must be punished with the maximum punishment of the death penalty.

In the trial of inhumane, barbaric brutal murder, it is appropriate to follow the decision in the case of Mohiuddin and others vs State.

The judgment also said that the crime against the convicted people has been proved by analyzing the testimony of the witnesses, the circumstances surrounding the incident, the confessional statement given by them under Section 164 of the Criminal Procedure Code, the seizure list, the report of the incident, the autopsy report, etc.

The tribunal ordered execution by hanging the condemned convicts until their death was confirmed.

All criminal appeals and jail appeals of convicted murderers were dismissed.

The sentence of death row convicts M Raju Munshi and M Rasel will be effective from the date of their arrest or voluntary surrender, said the High Court.

A Dhaka court sentenced five people to death for killing Ekushey Padak winning photojournalist Aftab Ahmed on March 24, 2017.

Of them, Rasel and Raju have been absconding since the case was filed.

According to the case details, on December 25, 2013, the 80-year-old photojournalist was killed at his Wapda Road house in Rampura, Dhaka.

A case was filed with Rampura police station accusing unnamed people.

On March 25, 2014, Sub-Inspector Md Ashik Iqbal of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB-3) submitted the charge sheet at the Dhaka chief metropolitan magistrate’s court accusing the six people.

Later on July 24, 2014, the court indicted the six accused including Humayun Kabir, driver of the slain journalist.

Aftab had a long, illustrious career, during which he served as chief photographer for the Bangla newspaper The Daily Ittefaq.

On October 12, 2022, the High Court upheld the death sentence of five persons, and the seven-year imprisonment of another, for the killing of Aftab Ahmed.
