Update : 12 Oct 2023, 09:14 PM

The Chamber Court of the Appellate Division on Thursday suspended the jail sentence given to Md Sohel Rana, former chief judicial magistrate of Comilla for contempt of court, until November 20.

The case will be heard on the same day by a full bench of the Appellate Division.

Chamber Court Justice M Enayetur Rahim delivered the order on Wednesday.

Senior lawyer Shah Manjurul Haque represented Sohel Rana in the court.

Earlier in the day, the High Court granted bail to Md Sohel Rana for 30 days three hours after he was sentenced to a month in prison.

He was charged with contempt of court after he disobeyed the High Court’s order to stay the proceedings of a criminal case.

Despite the High Court’s order, Sohel Rana, the former chief judicial magistrate in Comilla, continued the trial proceedings in violation of the court’s order.

Later, the High Court sought an explanation from the former chief judicial magistrate for disobeying the High Court order.

Sohel Rana submitted an explanation to the court in this regard but the High Court expressed dissatisfaction and issued a contempt of court rule against him.

He later sought an unconditional apology from the High Court for his acts.

However, the High Court rejected his unconditional apology and sentenced him to 30 days imprisonment.

Sohel Rana is currently attached to the Law Ministry as an additional district judge.
