The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on Thursday fixed August 10 for the heating of a petition filed seeking to impose a ban on all political activities, including rallies and gatherings of Jamaat-e-Islami.
The Appellate Division bench headed by Chief Justice Hasan Foez Siddique passed the order on Thursday following a request for speedy hearing of the appeal.
Barrister Tania Amir and Advocate Ahsanul Karim stood for the petition in the court.
At that time, they told the court that a contempt of court petition was filed against Jamaat-e-Islami leaders. As Jamaat announced a rally on Friday, the application needs to be heard soon.
On June 26, two separate petitions were filed seeking ban on all political activities of Jamaat and bringing a contempt of court charge as the party recently demanded registration at a gathering while the case regarding the registration is still under judicial consideration.
Bangladesh Tariqat Federation Secretary General Maulana Rezaul Haque Chandpuri, along with two others, filed the petition in the chamber court of the appellate division.
Barrister Tania Amir presented the petition.
Chamber Court Justice Md Abu Zafor Siddique sent the two petitions to the full bench of the appellate division for hearing.
A contempt of court petition was submitted against five leaders of Jamaat, including its Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman, for convening public meetings as a political organization even though their appeal is yet to be resolved by the supreme court.
The other four Jamaat leaders named in the petition are its Secretary General Dr Golam Parowar, Central Nayab- e- Ameer Dr Abdullah Mohammad Taher, Metropolitan South Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Nurul Islam Bulbul, and Nayeb-E-Ameer of Dhaka Advocate Helal Uddin.
In context, Jamaat-e-Islami had organized a rally in the capital on June 10, calling for the halt of inflation, the release of its Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman along with other national leaders and scholars, and the establishment of an accountable government.
The rally took place at the Engineers Institution Auditorium in Ramna, Dhaka.
In August, 2013, the High Court declared Jamaat's registration illegal following a writ petition filed in 2009 by Bangladesh Tariqat Federation's Secretary General Rezaul Haque Chandpuri and 24 others.
In the petition, they said Jamaat was a religion-based political party and it did not believe in the independence and sovereignty of Bangladesh.
Later, Jamaat-e-Islami filed the appeal with the apex court challenging the HC verdict.
