Neela Chowdhury, mother to the late actor Salman Shah, on Sunday again filed a no-confidence petition against the final report in the case over his death.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Manunur Rashid did not issue an order on the no-confidence petition immediately.
The Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) submitted the final report in the case on February 25, 2020. They had been asked to conduct the probe as Neela Chowdhury had filed a no-confidence petition against an earlier probe report submitted by the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) on February 10 the same year.
The PBI in its report binned the allegation of murder, saying the Bangla film industry star committed suicide following a family dispute. Subsequently, trial proceedings became stalled due to the suspension of regular court activities due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
On Sunday, the complainant’s lawyer Faruk Ahmed told Dhaka Tribune he had asked the court to allow Neela to give her statement on the latest no-confidence petition virtually, as she is currently staying in London, UK due to illness.
On September 6, 1996, the country was shocked by news of untimely death of Salman Shah. His body was found hanging from a ceiling fan at his Eskaton residence.
His father Kamaruddin Chowdhury filed an unnatural death case with Ramna police station. He later filed an application to turn it into a murder case and the court ordered the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to investigate the matter.
On November 3, 1997, CID filed the final report before the court, determinomg that the death was a suicide. However, Salman Shah’s family rejected the findings of the probe and demanded further investigation.
On May 19, 2003, the court ordered a judicial inquiry into the case.
On July 9, 2014, Metropolitan Magistrate Emdadul Haque submitted the judicial probe report before Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Bikash Kumar Shaha, once again citing the death as a suicide.
On December 21, 2014, Neela Chowdhury filed a no-confidence petition against the judicial probe report.
