Comilla attacks: Man remanded for Facebook live

A Comilla court has placed a man on two-day remand for circulating the matter of the Holy Quran kept in a Durga Puja pavilion on social media.

The accused was identified as Md Foyez Ahmed, 41.

Senior Judicial Magistrate Judge Nusrat Jahan Urmi passed the order on Tuesday.

Kotwali Model police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Anwarul Azim said police had sought a seven-day remand for questioning the arrested Fayez over the incident.

Meanwhile, police handed over the case to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to investigate further.

OC Anwarul said: “The CID will interrogate Foyez. We will provide full assistance to them.”

On October 13, tensions erupted among a faction of locals in Comilla after Foyez Ahmed went live on Facebook to report the alleged defamation of the Quran at a Puja venue in Nanuar Dighi area.

Police arrested him that night on charges of broadcasting the incident live and recording it on a mobile phone.

Later, police filed a case against him under the Digital Security Act (DSA).

The Comilla incident created a ripple effect causing hundreds of Hindu temples, houses and businesses being attacked and vandalized in nearly two dozen districts.
