Lease for setting up cattle market in Aftabnagar suspended

On May 15, a writ was filed in the High Court seeking direction not to set up a cattle market in Aftabnagar in public interest demanding environmental protection

The High Court has postponed the decision to set up a cattle market in Aftabnagar of the capital for a week in view of the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha. At the same time, the court issued a ruling regarding the cancellation of the lease.

The High Court bench comprising of Justice KM Kamrul Quader and Justice Mohammad Shawkat Ali Chowdhury gave this order after hearing the writ filed in public interest on Monday.

Prior to this, on May 15 a writ was filed in the High Court seeking direction not to set up a cattle market in Aftabnagar of the capital on the occasion of Eid-ul-Azha. Lawyer Md Yunus Ali Akand filed the writ in public interest demanding environmental protection.

In the writ, the secretary of Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives, Dhaka North City Corporation, chief land officer of Dhaka North City, chairman of Capital Development Authority, Eastern Housing and Dhaka district commissioner were made defendants.

On May 2, the tender was announced through the property department lease/notice signed by the chief property officer of Dhaka North City Corporation on behalf of the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives (Local Government Department). In the tender, five days including the Eid-ul-Azha day are mentioned about the cattle market.

In the circular, market leases are called for sale of sacrificial cows in seven places of North City Corporation, including vacant spaces from Block-B to H of Eastern Housing Aftab City, and part of Badda union parishad of the capital.
