The Dhaka Cyber Tribunal on Monday fined suspended police inspector Mahmud Saiful Karim alias Saif Amin Tk5 lakh in a Digital Security Act (DSA) case, filed by Jatiya Sangsad Whip Shamsul Hoque Chowdhury in 2019.

Dhaka Cyber Tribunal Judge Zulfiqar Hayat announced the verdict in the presence of the accused in the morning. The court also said that the convict will have to serve 18 months in prison in default of the payment.

Mohammad Haider Tanvir-uz Zaman, lawyer of the plaintiff, told BSS: "This verdict will make the public aware, so that no one can make false or defamatory comments about the whip or parliament or any member of the parliament (MP) to question the development progress achieved by the government."

According to case statement, on September 20, 2019, Amin posted a status on Facebook stating that Whip Shamsul Hoque Chowdhury earned Tk180 crore illegally from gambling.

The case was filed against him on September 25 in the court of Judge As-Shams Jaglul Hossain of Bangladesh Cyber Tribunal.

The Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit of the police filed a report against Amin on February 2, 2020.

Amin was suspended from his duty on September 24, 2020 through a letter signed by AIG Anwar Hossain Khan of Police headquarters.
