The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on Sunday upheld the bail granted by the High Court to Sonia Akhter Smriti, who was arrested for spreading rumours about Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on social media.
The Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Hasan Foez Siddique passed the order after hearing a writ petition against the High Court order.
Smiri was granted bail by the High Court on October 31 last year.
Earlier on October 4, the law enforcement agency arrested Sonia Akhter Smriti from her home in Beradanga under Rajbari district.
Later, she was sent to jail through a Rajbari court.
Sonia Akhter Smriti is the founder of the voluntary organization Rajbari Blood Donors Club.
Police said the science and technology affairs secretary of the ruling Awami League's Mijanpur union unit, filed a case against Smriti at Rajbari Sadar police station.
According to the case statement, Smriti made false and defamatory statements on social media on August 31 to tarnish the prime minister's reputation. Smriti went live on Facebook before her arrest and was heard talking to policemen.
