A writ has been filed in the High Court seeking order to include “Joy Bangabandhu” to the national slogan of Bangladesh “Joy Bangla”.

A High Court bench comprising Justice KM Kamrul Kader and Justice Mohammad Ali is set to hear the petition on Sunday, reports Bangla Tribune.

Supreme Court lawyer Abdullah Al Harun Bhuiyan Russell along with 13 others filed the writ.

On June 20, a total of 11 Supreme Court lawyers sent a legal notice to concerned officials to add “Joy Bangabandhu” to the national slogan.

The notice reads: “A gazette was issued to make ‘Joy Bangla' the national slogan of Bangladesh. But looking at Bangladesh's history, Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman paved the way for the liberation of this country through a war. So ‘Joy Bangla' without ‘Joy Bangabandhu' should not be used as the national slogan.”

The government on March 2 issued a gazette notification, declaring “Joy Bangla” as the country's national slogan.

In 1971, Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in his historic March 7 address concluded his speech chanting “Joy Bangla”.

“Joy Bangla” was also the main slogan during the Liberation War in 1971. Freedom fighters made the supreme sacrifice by shouting Joy Bangla slogan after being captured by Pakistan occupation forces.
